Stuttgart International Airport Train Transfers

Arriving at Stuttgart Airport passengers have a number of public transport options available for their onward travel. The train station in the airport is situated on the lower ground floor, where both platforms and ticket machines can be found.

The municipal train service is operated via the S-Bahn, or metro trains, that link the airport with the city of Stuttgart and its suburbs. The regional train network links up with this S-Bahn service at Bad Cannstadt, a suburb of Stuttgart and in the next few years this service will be expanded to towns lying further afield to alleviate road traffic to the airport.

The S-Bahn services S2 and S3 run approximately every 15 to 20 minutes during peak times and at 30 minute intervals at weekends and evenings. The journey into central Stuttgart takes around 30 minutes to complete. Each station is announced, making it easy for train passengers to get off at the correct stop. The trains are clean and comfortable and train travel is very affordable in Germany.

The S2 and S3 trains from Stuttgart Airport connect with the main train station in central Stuttgart, from where passengers can take either regional trains to popular destinations like Heidelberg, Tübingen, Ludwigsburg or Schwäbisch Hall or can board long distance Inter City or Inter Europe trains to Munich, Nuremberg, Ulm, Berlin, Paris or Brussels. Thanks to a comprehensive discounting system on German railways that link up with neighbouring countries like France, Belgium and the Czech Republic, train travel around Central Europe with Germany as its starting point can be very cheap and enjoyable.

On long distance journeys that link up with Stuttgart Airport trains like the S-Bahn services, passengers should note that delays can occur, especially during the very busy summer months, when Germany’s railway network sees a huge number of tourists travelling around the country for their summer holidays. Germany has also a huge number of students, most of whom use trains to travel between their university cities like Stuttgart, Tübingen or Ulm and their home destinations, so trains can get a little crowded at times. There are first and second class compartments available on long distance trains and food and refreshments are also widely available on such journeys. It is generally frowned upon to use mobile phones on such long distance journeys in the compartments and passengers are normally requested to leave their seat and have their conversation – no matter how quietly – in the corridor outside the compartment.

German trains from Stuttgart Airport have plenty of space for luggage, not just on the S-Bahn but also on regional and long distance journeys. The IEC and IC trains have special luggage compartments, while the regional trains have overhead shelves and space below the seating for suitcases and travel bags. Train doors close and lock automatically and passengers should take care, when boarding the trains, so not to get caught in the closing doors.

Being caught without a ticket on Germany railways or on trains from Stuttgart Airport can be costly. It usually costs at least a EUR 40.00 fine for a first offence and claiming ignorance of the rules won’t get passengers out of paying the fine. All tickets must be bought prior to commencing the journey, as there are no ticket dispensers on board of the train and the ticket inspectors do not sell tickets either.
